Diel cycle in a farmland bird is shaped by contrasting predation and human pressures

چکیده
Abstract In human-dominated landscapes, human disturbances may contrast (spatially and/or temporally) with risk imposed by non-human predators. However, how prey adjust behaviour to minimize from multiple threats remains unclear. Central-Western France, we investigated patterns of activity, space and habitat use, causes variations during the diel cycle grey partridge (captive-reared, released), a farmland bird facing risks (nocturnal predation, diurnal hunting pressure). We also influence individual relative risk-related features on fate birds. Birds adjusted their behaviours in ways consistent reduction nocturnal carnivores at night hunters daytime. recorded bimodal crepuscular likely explained commuting movements between spatially-separated sites composed different habitats: selection open terrains avoidance predator reservoirs vs. use high-vegetation cover observed differences surviving, hunted predated Predation activities act as contrasting pressures, selecting birds based spatial behaviour, which has shaped adjustments population level. An improved consideration temporal variation environmental pressures would help reliably address factors constraining populations, so increasing wildlife management efficiency.

Alternative Responses to Predation in Two Headwater Stream Minnows Is Reflected in Their Contrasting Diel Activity Patterns
Animals exhibit diel periodicity in their activity in part to meet energy requirements whilst evading predation. A competing hypothesis suggests that partitioning of diel activities is less important because animals capitalise on opportunity. To test these hypotheses we examined the diel activity patterns for two cyprinid minnows, chubbyhead barb Barbus anoplus and the Eastern Cape redfin minno...
متن کاملAnthropogenically-Mediated Density Dependence in a Declining Farmland Bird
Land management intrinsically influences the distribution of animals and can consequently alter the potential for density-dependent processes to act within populations. For declining species, high densities of breeding territories are typically considered to represent productive populations. However, as density-dependent effects of food limitation or predator pressure may occur (especially when...
متن کاملHabitat-Specific Population Growth of a Farmland Bird
BACKGROUND To assess population persistence of species living in heterogeneous landscapes, the effects of habitat on reproduction and survival have to be investigated. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We used a matrix population model to estimate habitat-specific population growth rates for a population of northern wheatears Oenanthe oenanthe breeding in farmland consisting of a mosaic of disti...
متن کاملMolecular diagnosis of bird-mediated pest consumption in tropical farmland
Biodiversity loss will likely have surprising and dramatic consequences for human wellbeing. Identifying species that benefit society represents a critical first step towards predicting the consequences of biodiversity loss. Though natural predators prevent billions of dollars in agricultural pest damage annually, characterizing which predators consume pests has proven challenging. Emerging mol...
متن کاملPredation of experimental nests is linked to local population dynamics in a fragmented bird population.
Artificial nest experiments (ANEs) are widely used to obtain proxies of natural nest predation for testing a variety of hypotheses, from those dealing with variation in life-history strategies to those assessing the effects of habitat fragmentation on the persistence of bird populations. However, their applicability to real-world scenarios has been criticized owing to the many potential biases ...
